What is the Selank peptide?
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP), designed as a stable analogue of a fragment of the natural tetrapeptide tuftsin, extended with a characteristic Pro-Gly-Pro motif at the C-end. It was developed at Russian neuroscience and immunochemistry research centres as a model compound to study the regulation of neuropsychiatric processes and the interaction of the nervous system with the immune system.
In experimental studies, Selank has been used to analyse mechanisms modulating emotional information processing, stress response and neurochemical balance in the central nervous system. Its effects on the expression of selected neurotrophic factors, the activity of signalling pathways related to the GABA-ergic system and the regulation of the expression of genes involved in neuronal adaptation were described. In in vitro and in vivo models, attention was paid to its potential ability to stabilise neuronal function under conditions of environmental stress and oxidative stress.
Due to its precisely defined chemical structure, good stability and reproducibility of the observed effects in experimental models, Selank is used in neurochemistry and molecular biology research, as well as in work on the regulation of the neuro-immune axis. It is also sometimes described in the scientific literature as a peptide that modulates the activity of neurotransmitter systems, making it a useful tool in experimental analyses of cognitive and emotional functions.
