What is Epithalon?
Epitalone (Epithalon) is a synthetic peptide composed of four amino acids (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly), representing a stabilised analogue of a fragment of natural peptides isolated from pineal gland tissue. This compound has been characterised in research since the end of the 20th century in the context of analyses of regulatory mechanisms related to the functioning of the biological clock and cellular homeostatic processes. Thanks to its simple, unambiguous structure and good solubility in aqueous media, epithalon has found use as a model peptide in studies of peptide signalling outside classical neurotransmitter pathways.
In preclinical studies, epithalon has been used to explore processes related to cell cycle regulation, cellular adaptation to environmental stress and the maintenance of functional stability of cells under long-term culture conditions. In the scientific literature, its effects on the expression of selected regulatory genes, the activity of enzyme systems linked to cellular metabolism, as well as potential effects on mechanisms related to telomere length and telomerase activity under experimental conditions have been described. These analyses were conducted both in in vitro models and in selected in vivo systems.
Because of its precisely defined chemical composition and the high reproducibility of the results obtained in research models, epitalone is used as an experimental tool in molecular biology, cell biology and experimental gerontology. It is also used as a reference peptide in studies of gene expression, cellular adaptive mechanisms and in validation procedures of analytical methods used for the analysis of short regulatory peptides. The product is intended for research use only.
