What is the BPC-157?
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acids whose sequence corresponds to a stable fragment of an endogenous protein present in mammalian gastric secretions. It was described and characterised in the 1990s in the context of research on peptides involved in protective and adaptive tissue mechanisms. Due to its high chemical stability and good solubility in aqueous media, the compound has proven to be a useful model for the analysis of peptide signalling processes outside the central nervous system.
In preclinical studies, BPC-157 has been used to explore mechanisms regulating tissue balance, the formation of new vascular structures and cellular responses to physical and chemical damaging stimuli. Its involvement in modulating the expression of selected growth mediators and elements of signalling pathways related to VEGF, eNOS and FAK, among others, as well as its effect on cytoskeletal organisation under experimental conditions, both in cell cultures and animal models, has been reported in the literature.
Due to its unambiguously defined molecular structure and the reproducibility of observed effects in research models, BPC-157 is used as an experimental tool in molecular biology, cell biology and pharmacology. It is also sometimes utilised as a reference peptide in cell migration analyses, regenerative processes and the validation of analytical methods used in the study of short bioactive peptides.
